Write to your local representative in support of An Act Regarding Free Expression (H.3594/S.2328)

  • Recommended Practices

    1. Keep it Personal and Respectful

      • Legislators are more likely to pay attention to authentic, personal stories. Share why free expression matters to you, your community, or your profession.

      • Always remain polite, even if you disagree with the legislator’s position.

    2. Be Concise and Clear

      • A postcard should highlight 1–2 main points only.

      • Use simple language that communicates urgency without being overwhelming.

    3. Center Core Values

      • Emphasize free expression as a cornerstone of democracy.

      • Connect the legislation to widely shared values like fairness, access to information, and protecting the rights of all people.

    4. Localize the Message

      • Show why this bill matters in Massachusetts communities specifically.

      • Mention local libraries, schools, or cultural spaces that benefit from protections for expression.

    5. Provide a Call to Action

      • Ask directly: “Please support and pass H.3594/S.2328.”

      • End with gratitude for the legislator’s time and service.

    Option 1: Civic Values

I urge you to vote yes and stand with our communities. Thank you for your leadership.

    Option 2: Personal & Localized

    As a [parent/educator/library user/student] in [town], I care deeply about protecting the right to free expression. H.3594/S.2328 ensures that our libraries and schools remain open spaces for diverse voices and ideas. Please support this important bill.

    Option 3: Emphasis on Protection

    Dear [Legislator’s Name],
    Free expression is under threat across the country, but here in Massachusetts we can set an example. By passing H.3594/S.2328, you will help guarantee that libraries and communities remain places of inclusion, not censorship. Please support this act.

  • If you’re mailing it yourself, don’t forget to put a stamp on your postcard, and then drop it in your nearest postal box. If you’re writing your postcard at the bookstore where you picked up postcards, give your finished postcard back to the bookstore to mail.
